Courage
Courage is often defined as the ability to tolerate and be with the discomfort of fear, or put a simpler way feeling the fear and doing it anyway. I was thinking that there are degrees of courage or perhaps there are circumstances where someone overcomes a greater challenge, but when I dig in deeper I think that I’m confusing bravery with courage. When I looked up the meaning of the words and contrasted them, there seemed to be one clear differentiating aspect - forethought or intent. Bravery is more about taking action without thinking about the consequences or not fearing the consequences, whereas courage is taking action after giving thought to the consequences and feeling the fear, but being intent on still taking the action. There is an implication that courage is about wrestling with personal demons, acknowledging them, but not letting them rule our actions.
Backyard Safari
I have been working through a 52 week creative photography course which has helped me to develop/hone some new creative concepts and stay engaged and inspired throughout the year. Week 46 of 52 was about storytelling and featured the prompt Backyard Safari. I liked the idea of this prompt as it encouraged me to view my backyard in a different manner - with fresh eyes - curious to showcase what I see - trying to present it in a different perspective.
One of the things I liked best about this prompt is that it encouraged me to stay close to home and not feel that I needed to venture to some new exotic place in order to find something photo-worthy.
Country Living
We’ve been living “in the country” - well let’s be honest we’re just outside of the city limits - for about 18 months now and while we’ve spent a lot of the time in renovation/chaos mode, I feel like I’ve spent enough time in the new living situation to appreciate some of the differences from living within walking distance of the city centre. I thought I’d write about what it’s been like - the good the bad and the unexpected.
There are a number of things that we got right with this move and for the most part I would say that we did a good job anticipating the differences/challenges that we’d face, but there were still a few surprises that neither one of us saw coming. One of the big drivers for this move was to be closer to nature and be able to spend time enjoying the peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of inner city living.
